Continuing the Wilson tradition of breaking down stereotypes that surround Black families, Ciara took to social media to show off her daughter’s budding skills as a water baby.
Everyone has heard the stereotype about Black people and water — namely, that African-Americans don’t like it in large body form and most can’t swim in it. Its origins in America can be traced back to, no surprise, systemic racism, but the “Level Up” singer is doing the work to make sure her kids don’t contribute to another negative cliché.
In the video, 3-year-old Sienna confidently swims to a glowing and ready-to-burst Ciara in the pool before cutting to a brother-sister tag-team attack on the “Promise” singer by little Sienna and her 6-year-old big brother Future Zahir.
Proudly showing off her kids’ swimming skills in a video, the singer’s post reads, “I taught my baby girl to swim and I’m sooo proud! She is too! Now both my babies can swim to me! #Swimming.”
Sienna’s dad, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, left a comment about how thrilled he was to see his baby girl taking to the water, and he managed to slide in a little joke for his wife too. “The best! They love Momma so much! I love swimmin’ to you too… ,” he commented under the image.
The post received over 600,000 views, and fans who were almost as proud of Sienna as her mama dropped plenty of comments commending Cici on her parenting skills.
“This made me so happy,” commented a follower. “Too many black families don’t know how to swim. It’s important that we teach our children and ourselves! Great job Sienna.”
“U are so good with ur kids a wonderful mom,” a second complimented.
“Yes black family! Y’all better know how to swim! ,” exclaimed a third.
“Can you teach me,” a fourth fan asked. “I’m 21 and still don’t know how to swim it’s sad lol @ciara.”
“You’re an amazing Mother ,” gushed a fifth.
Ciara and Russell Wilson tied the knot in 2016. Future Zahir is Ciara’s oldest child, whose father is her former fiancé Future. Russell and Cici are currently preparing to welcome their second child together and third in the family on what looks like any day now.
